MADRID (Reuter) - Madrid's mayor put the city on pollution alert, introducing measures to combat a thickening smog. A dull orange cloud was hanging over Madrid after calm weather, which prevented exhaust fumes and smoke from blowing away.
Yesterday morning pollution levels were more than double the permitted level. The Mayor, Jose Maria Alvarez, announced measures to combat the problem, including a cut in the hours central heating can be switched on and a ban on parking along main roads.
