Chancellor Helmut Kohl's controversial candidate to become German president, Steffen Heitmann, yesterday denied that he had hinted at a possible withdrawal of his candidacy, Steve Crawshaw reports from Bonn. Mr Heitmann has come under fire for comments that the mass murder of the Jews under Hitler belonged to an era which was now past, and for remarks seen as criticising the number of foreigners in Germany.
