Venezuelans in hillside shantytowns ringing Caracas began clearing away mud and debris yesterday following a devastating storm that killed at least 150 people and left thousands homeless, AP reports from Caracas.

The sun was shining over the battered slums, and Tropical Storm Bret was breaking up as it moved off the north-east coast of Colombia, the US National Weather Service reported from Miami.
