Shen Tong, a Chinese dissident banned last week from holding a news conference at UN headquarters, has been invited to address the UN Correspondents' Association tomorrow in a club room, AP reports from New York.
The reporters plan to meet Mr Shen at the UN gates and escort him inside. A UN official said the press club could be shut down if they do so. Reporters covering the United Nations voted to defy the Secretary-General and invite Mr Shen. Boutros Boutros-Ghali banned the news conference at UN headquarters after pressure from China's ambassador. Mr Shen was a driving force behind the Tiananmen Square democracy movement in 1989.
