Hungary lorry driver swerves into refugees

A Hungarian lorry driver has purportedly filmed himself swerving his vehicle towards a group of refugees in Calais.

In a video posted to the driver’s own YouTube channel, he can be seen driving the last five or six miles towards the ferry port at the French town, past the mass of tents and temporary structures that has become known as “The Jungle”.

Refugees can be seen walking along the side of the dual carriageway throughout the 14-minute video, which is intermittently narrated by the driver in Hungarian.

Around halfway through, the driver can clearly be seen swerving across three lanes towards a group of refugees who have just tried to get onto the lorry in front.

According to reports, the driver shouts a series of expletives at the men as he drives at them, including: “Come on then, f*** the lot of you!”

At another point in the video, the driver’s lorry appears to stop for a short period, during which refugees can be seen rushing towards the stationary vehicle.

The driver can be heard starting up the lorry again and shouting at the refugees to “get down from there” and “don’t bend my mirror”.

Speaking at the end of the video after turning the camera on himself, the driver smiles and says: “So, quite a trip, eh, these last six kilometres? The migrants have managed to divert me so much that I couldn’t get into the port parking area.

“Can you imagine what it’s like to be here in the evening, after the sun sets? Guys, don’t go to England from Calais. You get it...”

The video has been watched more than two million times online, and received its fair share of comments attacking the driver’s apparent attempt to swerve at refugees.

In comments below the video, he apologises to some extent for his language and behaviour.

But according to his own limited English translation, he defends the video on the basis that Calais has become “more like a war zone, where the rules do not seem to exist”.

And he calls on people to share the footage online as a way of spreading awareness of what is going on at the border. You can watch the full video here.
