Russia's Far East region, based on the key port of Vladivostok, headquarters of the Pacific Fleet, declared itself a republic, Reuter reports from Moscow.
The region's parliament declared it a republic a week after the economic powerhouse of Sverdlovsk in the Urals took the same step. By promoting themselves to republics the regions claim law- making powers to assert greater economic independence.
