Finns anxious about their economy and foreign issues yesterday selected Martti Ahtisaari, leader of the opposition Social Democrats, and Elisabeth Rehn, the Defence Minister, to fight it out for the powerful post of president on 6 February, Reuter reports from Helsinki.
The two came top in the first round. According to preliminary results, Mr Ahtisaari polled 25.9 per cent and Ms Rehn, of the small Swedish People's Party, got 22 per cent.
