Peking - China broke 18 years of silence to reveal details of a fire in which 694 people - including 597 children - died on Lunar New Year's Day in a crowded cinema. Reports on the most disastrous fire since the Communist Party took power in 1949 had been suppressed, apparently as part of Peking's policy of covering up bad news. Reuter
