BRIEF Balkan update: villagers in Bulgaria's Rhodope mountains are locking their doors and hiding under their beds after a sheep has gone missing. It is the third to disappear in three years in the region. The villagers have, naturally enough, concluded that a vampire addicted to sheep is on the rampage. On the other hand, Reuter tells us, they agree that the animals may have fallen down a hole, but they are too scared to go and look.
