Brazil is moving ahead on a controversial plan to cut a road through the heart of the Amazon rainforest to link up with the Pacific coast. Brazilian environmentalists believe this could devastate the western Amazon rainforest, one of the last great wildernesses on Earth. The work is part of a long-time dream by Brazil, which has no Pacific coast, to link its road system with Peru and gain access to ports on the Pacific and thus Asian markets.
