Istanbul - Up to four people were killed and 25 wounded in new clashes here yesterday between Muslim Alawite protesters and police as pressure mounted on Turkey's Interior Minister and on Istanbul's law-and- order chief to resign.

The demonstrators were protesting against an automatic-weapons attack on Sunday against cafs in an Alawite district by unidentified gunmen.

Three people were killed in the shooting in the Gazi district, home to members of the moderate community. Twenty more were killed in protests until late on Tuesday.

Two members of parliament from the right-wing True Path party of the Prime Minister, Tansu Ciller, called on the Interior Minister, Nahit Mentese and the Istanbul law-and-order chief, Hayri Kozakcioglu, to stand down.
