BEIRUT (Reuter) - The former Lebanese president and Christian warlord Suleiman Franjieh died of heart failure at the American University Hospital in Beirut. He was 82.
Franjieh, a Christian Maronite and the leader of Lebanon's traditional feudal elite, was president from 1970 to 1976 and led the country when it was dragged into 15 years of civil war in 1975. He was a close ally of Syria, the main power broker in Lebanon.
