The former deputy Russian prime minister, Yegor Gaidar, was elected to head the new reformist party, Democratic Choice of Russia, AFP reports from Moscow. Mr Gaidar, who was the only candidate, was elected by 490 to 14 on the second day of the party's founding congress in Moscow. In 1992, he was responsible for Russia's economic 'shock therapy'.
