German steel strike talks fail

Talks to end the strike in eastern Germany's steel industry broke down and a spokesman for the IG Metall union said it would probably be extended, Reuter reports from Frankfurt. But engineering industry employers backed a pay deal signed in Saxony on Friday - involving increases of 17-18 per cent this year - that promises to end two weeks of strikes.
