WASHINGTON (AP) - One American in four is of German ancestry, the Census Bureau said yesterday, and they make up the nation's largest ethnic group. The Irish are next, one American in six, followed by the English, one in eight; Afro-Americans, one in 10; and Italians, one in 17.
More than 12 million people consider themselves to be just plain Americans: one American in 20.
A long version of the 1990 census form, which went to one household in six, asked people about their ancestry. The Census Bureau used their answers to estimate national totals for each group.
