The Guatemalan military sent armoured cars and troops to break up a demonstration as opposition mounted to President Jorge Serrano's seizure of near-dictatorial powers, Reuter reports from Guatemala City.

Congress called for the army to depose the President and said he had been under investigation for corruption when he announced his measures on Tuesday. The US said it was freezing more than dollars 17m ( pounds 11m) in aid to Guatemala in protest against Mr Serrano's suspension of constitutional rule.
