HONOLULU (Reuter) - Tens of thousands of people were yesterday ordered to evacuate beach front homes and hotels as Hurricane Iniki bore down on the Hawaiian islands with winds of up to 165mph.
Iniki, the first hurricane to threaten Hawaii in 10 years, veered on to a course expected to take it between Oahu, the US state's most populous island, and Kauai early this morning, according to an emergency broadcast by the Hawaiian Civil Defence.
Authorities responded by ordering the evacuation of all homes and other buildings on Oahu within 300ft of the ocean. That included the high-rise hotels of Waikiki beach.
