BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - The Foreign Secretary, Douglas Hurd, said he hoped for better relations between Britain and Argentina when he arrived here yesterday. He is the most senior British official to visit Argentina since the Falklands war.
As Mr Hurd arrived, the Argentine President, Carlos Menem, described the 1982 war as a mistake that had set back Argentina's efforts to establish sovereignty over the Falkland Islands by 100 years. 'Before the year 2000, through our growing diplomatic activity, perhaps we will be setting foot on the Malvinas,' Mr Menem said.
