A furious row over violence within marriage has broken out in Italy after the Supreme Court cleared a husband of attempting to rape his wife, Reuter reports from Rome.

Gianfranco Napoleoni, a 44-year-old engineer, was convicted of attempting to rape his wife Daniela as their marriage broke down in 1990. But the nine-month sentence was overturned on appeal, a verdict confirmed by the Supreme Court.
