Bangalore - Police fired on Hindus and Muslims battling over the issue of language in the streets of Bangalore yesterday, taking the death toll in two days of rioting to 16. The trouble began when Muslims hurled stones at a Hindu rally protesting against newly introduced news broadcasts on state-run Doordarshan television in Urdu, which is spoken by India's 160 million Muslims and by Pakistanis.
