Vice squads detained 802 Iranians this week for flouting the Islamic dress code, Reuter reports from Tehran.

Fewer women wearing make-up or showing hair from under headscarves could be seen on the streets yesterday, three days after police began checking on people's appearance. The targets of the crackdown are 'badly covered' women who defy the Islamic dress code - although some men and women were detained for wearing sun-glasses.

Security forces also arrested more than 9,000 drug traffickers and addicts in a nationwide sweep.
