Iran yesterday played down Tuesday's meeting between John Major and Salman Rushdie, accusing Britain of keeping alive an issue which by implication Tehran wanted to forget, writes Safa Haeri. The meeting was the first such gesture of support from a British prime minister since Ayatollah Khomeini condemned the author to death over The Satanic Verses.
