An Iranian Kurdish rebel group said Iranian forces had thrust three miles into an area of Iraqi Kurdistan after several days of shelling, Reuter reports from Nicosia. On Saturday the Iranians 'crossed the border with a variety of heavy weapons' 190 miles north-east of Baghdad and seized a strip of territory, the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan said. Iraq protested to Iran about shelling from across the border, which it said had killed several Kurdish families and forced 3,000 to leave their homes.
