President Saddam Hussein's Defence Minister personally shot several army officers executed recently in southern Iraq, an opposition group claimed, AP reports from Nicosia. The Tehran-based Supreme Assembly for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq said in a statement that Major-General Ali Hassan al-Majid ordered regional commanders to watch the executions by firing squad at an army base near the Medina region of Basra province. The officers were executed for failing to crush Shia Muslim rebels, the group said.
