Mordechai Gur, the deputy defence minister, who as a general led Israeli paratroopers in capturing the Old City of Jerusalem in the 1967 war, shot himself dead in the garden of his Tel Aviv house early yesterday after suffering from cancer for a number of years. He left a note saying he did not want to go on suffering and being a burden to his family.

Chief of staff from 1974 to 1978, he oversaw the planning of the Entebbe raid in 1976 in which the Israeli army restored some of the prestige it had lost in the 1973 war by freeing 102 airliner hijacking victims in Uganda. Friends said Mr Gur kept details of his illness and suffering to himself.
