Ivory Coast's new president, Henri Konan Bedie, strengthened his hold on power yesterday with the resignation of his rival, the Prime Minister, Alassane Ouattara, Reuter reports from Abidjan. Mr Bedie succeeds President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, who died on Monday aged 88.
