Bonn - The German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel, head of the embattled Free Democratic Party (FDP), fended off a challenge to his leadership from the former economics minister Jurgen Mollemann.
Mr Mollemann, who had blamed Mr Kinkel for the FDP's slide in last Sunday's general election, withdrew his demand for a post in the new government. He said he was no longer available for a new Science and Research Ministry, for which he had originally put himself forward.
In another swipe at Mr Kinkel, Mr Mollemann said the FDP had been 'sliding into the abyss for 17 months'. Reuter
