Egon Krenz, East Germany's last hardline communist leader, lodged an appeal against his manslaughter conviction for the deaths of refugees killed in the 1980s as they tried to flee over the Berlin Wall. A Berlin court on Monday sentenced Krenz to six and a half years in prison. He denounced the trial as "victors' justice" and vowed to fight the ruling in the European Court of Justice.
