Landslide kills 300

Up to 300 people were killed in a landslide caused by torrential rain in southern Ecuador when a mountainside gave way and buried a gold-mining village, Reuter reports from Quito. Radio reports said 200 houses were swept away as residents were having lunch to celebrate Mother's Day in the Las Brisas area of Nambija.
