Moscow - Chechen rebels freed 12 Russian police commandos, the only remaining hostages from a raid last month into the neighbouring Dagestan region. But in Chechnya, hundreds of separatist fighters were still blocked by Russian troops in the village of Novogroznensky, in a stand-off reminiscent of last month's siege in Dagestan. The hostages, among 37 from an elite OMON unit seized in the Dagestani village of Pervomayskoye on 10 January, were exchanged for a number of guerrillas - up to 11 - captured when Russian forces stormed the settlement.
