Lebanon severed relations with Iraq after claiming that President Saddam Hussein's government had ordered the assassination of a prominent Iraqi dissident, Sheik Taleb Ali al-Suheil, AP reports from Beirut.

Iraqi diplomats in Beirut were given 72 hours to leave the country. Two Iraqi diplomats, the cultural attache, Mohammed Kazem Faris, and the commercial attache, Khaled Alwan Khalaf, were being held as suspects, but Baghdad refused to lift their immunity.
