The Egyptian authorities have charged opposition Socialist Labour Party leader Ibrahim Shukri and the editor of the party newspaper with criminal libel, Reuter reports from Cairo.

The charges arise from articles in the party newspaper al-Shaab alleging that the Prime Minister, Atef Sedki, Zakaria Azmi, the head of President Hosni Mubarak's office, and Cairo's governor, Omar Abdelakher, protected a building contractor who was arrested last month and charged with corruption.
