Warren Christopher, the US Secretary of State, said yesterday the United States was consulting with allies about strengthening sanctions against Libya, including imposing an oil embargo, Reuter reports from Washington.

Testifying to a Senate subcommittee, Mr Christopher said: 'I think the time has come to stiffen the embargo against Libya. We're consulting with our allies now about ways to stiffen it and one of the things we want to talk about is an oil embargo.' Washington has demanded that Libya hand over two officials it has indicted for the Lockerbie bombing.
