JOHANNESBURG (Reuter) - Malawian democracy activists yesterday demanded that President Hastings Kamuzu Banda allow international monitoring of a referendum on multi-party politics and lift media curbs to ensure the poll was free and fair.

The Alliance for Democracy opposition group said it welcomed the poll announced by Dr Banda on Sunday but proposed the creation of an independent referendum commission to lay down procedures governing access to the media.
