South Africa's President, Nelson Mandela, hinted at the possibility of holding a referendum to test Afrikaner opinion on a separate homeland for whites, Reuter reports from Pretoria. 'We want to allow Afrikaners themselves to express themselves on this issue,' Mr Mandela said. But he added: 'We have made them no commitment on this question.'
