Mexico's rulers take a beating

Guanajuato - Mexico's ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) suffered its most crushing defeat in 66 years in power when the conservative National Action Party (PAN) candidate, Vicente Fox, won elections for governor of central Guanajuato state by a 2-1 margin. The PRI has given up only four of Mexico's 31 states to the opposition since coming to power in 1929. In the southeastern state of Yucatan the ruling party and the PAN squared off for a traditional post-election brawl after official results gave victory to the PRI candidate, Victor Cervera Pacheco, in the closest vote ever seen in the state.
