Energy chief quits over Iraq's power cuts

Iraq's Electricity Minister has resigned amid public anger over frequent power and water cuts in the searing summer heat.

Many Iraqis get fewer than six hours of electricity each day, despite billions of dollars spent trying to repair the power grid since the 2003 US-led invasion. Iraqis have been told it may take another two years to get the grid working properly.

Two people were killed after security forces fired on a rowdy crowd in the southern city of Basra demonstrating against the outages.
