The former head of Israel's Shin Bet security agency has accused the country's leaders of exaggerating the effectiveness of a military strike against Iran.

The claim is an indication of Israel's turmoil over how to tackle the Iranian nuclear programme.

Yuval Diskin said the judgement of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak was clouded by "messianic feelings" and they should not be trusted to lead policy on Iran. Mr Diskin said a strike could accelerate Iran's programme.
