Gunmen murder coalition politician

Ap

Gunmen killed an Iraqi politician who had won a seat in parliament for the Iraqiya coalition headed by the former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, in the restive northern city of Mosul yesterday, police said.

Bashar al-Hamid was wounded in the chest in the attack in front of his home and died a short time later. Hamid's driver also was wounded. "We heard the sound of shooting then we came out. We found them lying on the ground and chaos surrounded the area," said Ali Hassan, a neighbour. Iraqi and US forces cordoned off the area to search for the gunmen and a suspect was arrested, police said.
