A coalition led by the Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, emerged on Monday as the biggest winner in the parliamentary elections held last month, according to preliminary results.
The embattled premier’s hopes of securing a third term in office were boosted by the results, although the State of Law alliance fell short of a majority in the 328-seat parliament and would need to secure a broader coalition.
The group gained at least 92 seats, with its two main Shia rivals, Ammar al-Hakim’s Muwatin and the Ahrar movement loyal to Moqtada al-Sadr, following with a combined 57 seats.
