Three suicide bombers attacked the police headquarters in the northern city of Mosul yesterday, killing a police commander who had escaped at least five previous assassination attempts, officials said.
Lt Col Shamil al-Jabouri had relentlessly pursued al-Qa'ida militants in their former stronghold of Mosul. Police shot one of the attackers in a yard, and his vest exploded, but the other suicide bombers charged into the building. One entered the ground floor office where Mr Jabouri was sleeping and blew himself up.
