Seven Muslim militants were hanged in a Cairo prison for attacking foreign tourists and conspiring to overthrow the government, Reuter reports from Cairo. It was the largest group of people executed for a political crime in Egypt's modern history.

The authorities have referred 770 more militants to military courts on charges of forming an illegal organisation to plant bombs and assassinate public figures. The trials begin dria next week.
