Zaire's President Mobutu Sese Seko sent his feared presidential guards to the scene of ethnic fighting in the Kivu area of eastern Zaire, agencies report from Kinshasa.
Up to 3,000 people have been killed in fighting between Zaireans and immigrant Rwandans, the international aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres said. Belgium, Zaire's former colonial power, on Wednesday accused Mr Mobutu of deliberately fanning the unrest in the region.
