Hosni Mubarak was confirmed as President of Egypt for six more years yesterday, after winning 96.3 per cent of valid votes in a referendum in which he was the only candidate, Reuter reports from Cairo.
'I will do all I can to improve the level of income of the simple citizen in this country,' Mr Mubarak said after the result. But he avoided committing himself to reform of the constitution and allowing Egyptians to choose between a number of candidates for president in a direct vote.
