Bechstein, the legendary German piano maker whose customers included Liszt, Wagner and Debussy, has filed for bankruptcy, Reuter reports from Berlin. Its manager, Karl Schulze, said the 140-year-old company faced liquidation because of heavy losses and falling sales. But he hoped it could be saved if the Berlin state government steps in to rescue it.
