A mysterious gas killed seven people and 56 were taken to hospital in a residential suburb of Matsumoto city in Japan on Monday night, writes Terry McCarthy from Tokyo. Police and scientists have not determined what caused the poisoning, which descended on a small area of the Kita Fukashi district. Residents in a panic stumbled into the streets, vomiting and coughing.
