Jean-Michel Couve, a former mayor of St Tropez, narrowly defeated the incumbent, Alain Spada, 49, to retake the town hall of the resort after a bitter election battle, AP reports from Nice. Mr Spada antagonised many people with his allegedly heavy-handed tactics in trying to curb development of the popular Riviera town.
