Juan Carlos Wasmosy, a Paraguayan construction tycoon, was sworn in yesterday as the first freely elected president in the country's history, Reuter reports from Asuncion. Mr Wasmosy took over from General Andres Rodriguez, who steered the country to democracy after overthrowing Alfredo Stroessner in 1989.
