General Ibrahim Babangida's government announced that new presidential elections would be held on 14 August, AP reports from Abuja.

Meanwhile, Abimola Davis, a top official with the organisation that filed suit to derail the elections in June admitted that the annulment was 'an organised confusion by just a few of us to prolong the lifespan of the present military administration'.
