CHIEF Moshood Abiola's campaign to assume the presidency he is believed to have won in Nigeria's aborted June elections was boosted yesterday when a Lagos high court ruled that the military-appointed interim government was illegal, writes Karl Maier.

The ruling sent jubilant Abiola supporters spilling into the streets. Two previous court challenges failed, the most recent when the Supreme Court said it had no jurisdiction. The government is expected to appeal.
